Dear user,

You may have already heard about the new and exciting projects underway at INRO, and we wanted to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on the most recent events and developments.

We are happy to announce that EMME/2, the industry-standard transportation planning software package, continues to grow in popularity with 13% growth in the worldwide user base over the last two years. Thanks to you - the INRO community - for continuing to demonstrate that EMME/2 is the most powerful and proven framework for transport planning, and that INRO users are among the best and brightest in the industry.

The Future is Emme

We are hard at work on a new platform for EMME/2! Among the priorities at INRO are new network editing features, modelling improvements, intuitive visualization and analysis, improved scripting, and brand new workflow and integration tools. While there are lots of things on our plate, we are planning on getting the new features out the door just as soon as they become available.

Your first glimpse of the future Emme will be Emme 3 Beta, a preliminary version of our new platform so you can get started with:

  • A brand new application, Emme 3, incorporating the engines of both EMME/2 and Enif in one package
  • Brand new graphic network editors
  • A new look-and-feel
  • Backwards compatibility with EMME/2 data, models, macros, and Enif plots
As always, INRO respects the investment that clients have made in EMME/2 over the last two decades in terms of data, models, macros and plot configurations. EMME/2 users will find that migration to the new Emme platform does not require any substantial changes to existing data, models, macros or plot configurations.

Emme 3 software releases, including Emme 3 Beta, will be provided FREE to clients with an existing EMME/2 Software Support Agreement (SSA). We will be releasing Emme 3 Beta in Q1 2006. If you would like to be part of our advance test program please let us know by contacting us at sales@inro.ca.

Emme 3 represents INRO's commitment to the future of Emme, but Emme 3 Beta is just the tip of the iceberg. There will be many other exciting features coming, so stay tuned; We'll be sure to keep you abreast of ongoing developments.

The Dynameq Difference

The word is getting out that Dynameq, the microsimulator for equilibrium dynamic traffic assignment, can be an invaluable complement to both traditional planning packages and conventional microsimulation. After its official release last February, Dynameq is being put to use on many projects around the world to reliably and accurately model traffic dynamics on large, congested networks.

Dynameq gives planners and operators a view into dynamic traffic conditions, produces reliable route choice on large, congested networks and provides rational scenario comparisons that are only possible with an equilibrium-based assignment. Projects in Montreal, California and Switzerland are already showing remarkable calibrations for dynamic models. 19th International EMME/2 User's Conference

For three days, from October 19-21, over 80 transport professionals gathered at the Seattle Art Museum for the 19th Annual International EMME/2 Users' Conference.

Conference proceedings were representative of the breadth of EMME/2 applications. Highlights included modelling for the London 2012 Olympics, toll analyses, time-of-day choice models, integrating EMME/2 with GIS, vehicle emissions, and demand microsimulation.

By popular demand, a small portion of the conference was dedicated to Dynameq. This included an introduction to Dynameq and an initial report from an ongoing corridor study by the Ville de Montreal.

Many thanks to hosts Puget Sound Regional Council and WSDOT as well as sponsors Cambridge Systematics, Mirai Transportation Planning and Engineering, and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

3rd Asian EMME/2 Users' Conference

The 3rd Asian EMME/2 Users' Conference was hosted by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology on August 15-16. The Introduction to EMME/2 and Enif pre-conference course was filled to capacity with 28 participants, more than any previous INRO course.

Delegates from the U.S.A., Canada, Israel, Malaysia, and across China delivered over 20 presentations to an audience of more than 60 planners and researchers, who engaged in a lively discussion.

The CRT-S was announced as an official EMME/2 training center in China, offering instruction in Mandarin. Contact Xia Xiaomei at crts-usst@163.com to arrange training.

Three organizations vied to host the next Asian conference. A vote among the conference participants awarded the next meeting to the Hang Zhou City Planning and Design Research Institute. The following Asian conference will be hosted by Perunding Atur in Malaysia.
